Sheriff: Kenton Co. Employees Targeted by Email Scam
Kenton County employees were the target of an email scam, Sheriff Chuck Korzenborn said Monday.
The employees received emails from an out-of-office supervisor requesting that they purchase gift cards. Those employees were then directed to scratch off the back of the cards in order to reveal number codes and to send a clear picture of those codes on all the cards to a specific mobile phone number.
That number was 551-257-5166.
According to the sheriff's office, the employees recognized the request to be a scam. Even though the supervisor's name was correct, the email address used from earthlink.net appeared to be suspect.
Employees contacted the supervisor directly to confirm the scam attempt and then began to alert other county government offices.
The sheriff's office said that if a request from someone you know appears to be unusual, do not return the email or call the number provided. Instead, contact the person possibly being impersonated to confirm.
