Covington Firefighters Continue Efforts to Raise Awareness of PTSD
September 15 marks three years since retired Covington Fire Department Assistant Chief Alan "Chip" Terry was lost to suicide.
Since then, recognition and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has become a priority for the local firefighting community. An annual symposium focusing on PTSD for first responders and the Chip Terry Fund for First Responders were initiated to assist local firefighters, fifteen of whom have received treatment.
Though the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted live events, this local effort moves forward even though the fundraising activities and community seminar had to be canceled. The Covington Fire Department, Covington Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 38, and Terry's wife, Jo Terry, are instead promoting a Stand Down for PTSD Awareness event through September 17.
Each shift will gather for a trauma/PTSD educational class including a discussion about resources. The Covington Retired Local 38 Firefighters will also participate and support currently serving firefighters for the three-day event.
This training will be available to any fire, EMS, and police agency in the Greater Cincinnati area who wishes to participate. PTSD resources on Terrace Metrics (online mental health assessments), University of Cincinnati Stress Center and the IAFF Center of Excellence will be circulated.
Presentations started Tuesday morning and will continue on Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Covington Fire Company 1 (100 East Robbins Street) for downtown stations, and 1:30 p.m. for Kenton County drill field stations 5 and 8.
In conjunction there will be a fundraiser for the “Chip Terry Fund” hosted by Revival Vintage Spirits & Bottle Shop on October 16, 2020 with in store purchases at 5% off for firefighters, 50% of sales going to the “Chip Terry Fund”, and an online raffle to win:
