Man Holds Woman, Child at Gunpoint Leading to Boone Co. Standoff
A man was taken into custody after a seven-hour standoff in Florence that ended with a home partially engulfed in flames.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on Lakeview Drive in Florence after being dispatched following a call about a person who refused to leave. The man in question barricaded himself inside.
Just before Christopher A. Sawyer surrendered to deputies, heavy smoke and flames began to appear from inside the home.
The Florence Fire Department was already staged nearby and moved in to extinguish the fire.
The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
Deputies learned that Sawyer, 38, of Florence, allegedly held a woman and her young daughter against their will for nearly six hours.
Sawyer was armed with a handgun, held the victims at gunpoint, and threatened to kill the woman, deputies said. He blocked the woman from leaving the home but at one point became distracted long enough for the woman to call police.
Sawyer was arrested but was being treated for possible smoke inhalation. He was later lodged at the Boone County Detention Center where he is charged with one count of first degree wanton endangerment, two counts of first degree unlawful imprisonment, one count of third degree terroristic threatening, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
