Thomas More Falls in National Title Game
The top-seeded and number-one ranked Thomas More Saints fell in the national championship game of the NAIA women's basketball tournament on Tuesday night, 72-61, at the hands of second-seeded Westmont.
The Saints end their season at 29-2.
Thomas More jumped out to an early lead, 15-8, following a three-point shot by Courtney Hurst, but a 7-2 run by Westmont closed the gap to two, 17-15.
In the second quarter, Westmont took control, using a 19-7 run to build a 34-26 lead.
The Saints trailed at halftime, 34-28.
In the second half, the Warriors extended their lead early, 45-35, but the Saints responded with six unanswered points to close the gap to 45-41 with just over a minute and a half remaining in the third quarter.
Thomas More was as close as three points down, 51-48, with seven and a half minutes remaining, but that would be as close as they came.
Emily Simon led the Saints with 14 points while Summer Secrist had 13 and Taylor Clos added 11.
Zoie Barth was injured in the Saints' semifinal game and did not play.
