Independence Firefighters Host Benefit for Family Killed in Crash
A benefit is planned on Saturday for the family killed in a head-on crash on Staffordsburg Road in Kenton County.
Independence Professional Firefighters Local 3945 is hosting the benefit for Rodney Pollitt, 26, Samantha Pollitt, 27, and their three children, Hailieann, 9, Brenden, 8, and Cailie, 6. All five were killed when a driver speeding at nearly 100 miles per hour smashed into their car on October 26.
The funds will help with the burial expenses, and will also endow a new scholarship to benefit children with Down's Syndrome in Grant County Schools, where the kids attended.
On Saturday, the benefit at St. Barbara Church (4042 Turkeyfoot Rd., Independence) will feature food from Smokin' This & That BBQ, and live music from the Old Folkers and Pete Dressman.
There will be raffles and auctions.
The benefit is scheduled from 6 to 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, Daniel Greis, 57, faces five counts of murder related to the accident. Prosecutors and investigators believe that he was drinking, smoking marijuana, and speeding at nearly 100 miles per hour when he crossed into the Pollitts' lane and crashed into them.
A Kenton County grand jury is considering the charges.
He remains hospitalized.
