Northern Kentucky Beats Illinois-Chicago, 86-51; Women Shock Green Bay
Northern Kentucky ran up the scoreboard early and never looked back Friday night, rolling over Illinois-Chicago, 86 to 51 at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights.
The Norse have now won two straight to open the Horizon League season at 2-0, and 9-5 overall.
Drew McDonald put up 19 points and 12 rebounds, his fourth-straight game with a double-double. Mason Faulkner added 15 and Lavone Holland put in 12. Marcus Ottey led UIC (5-10, 0-2) with 15 points.
Though the game was tied at 2 at the 17:45 mark, NKU outscored UIC 41 to 8 over the next 13:26 to take a 43 to 10 lead with 4:19 remaining in the half. The Norse led at halftime, 49 to 16.
The second half was much of the same.
NKU went on a 9 to 0 run towards the end of the game and led by as many as 41 points with 5:06 left in the game.
The Norse buried 10 3-point shots on 21 attempts and hit 22 of 28 free throws.
Ten different Norse players scored in the game and the NKU bench outscored UIC's by a 35 to 19 margin.
NKU never trailed in the game.
Northern Kentucky travels to Oakland (9-6, 1-1) on Friday, January 5. That Horizon League match-up will be televised on ESPN2 with a 9 p.m. tipoff.
NKU women upset #19 Green Bay in Horizon League action
The Norse women got a much-needed morale boost, upsetting #19 Green Bay, 62 to 54 at BB&T Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Northern Kentucky (3-10, 1-1) was led by Taryn Taugher who had 17 points, which included hitting 9 out of 10 tries at the free throw line, Molly Glick with 16, and Mikayla Terry with 15.
Green Bay dropped to 11-2, 1-1 on the season.
NKU heads to Detroit Mercy (0-13, 0-2) on Thursday night.
