Multiple Events Keep Newport Police Busy on Wednesday Night
A few things all happening at the same time led to a busy Wednesday night for Newport Police - and for residents looking for answers on social media.
The River City News reached out to Newport Police Chief Tom Collins who cleared up the details after neighbors were concerned that someone had fired shots at officers.
Collins said that officers did report to dispatch that shots had been fired, but that was based on what was audible to them. There was no confirmation that a gun had been fired, Collins said, and no one was arrested on a gun charge.
Around the same time, there was a report of an armed robbery around the area between Tenth and Hodge Streets. Police believe this may have been an attempt by someone to buy prescription drugs - and being ripped off. No formal police report was filed by any victim.
Officers were already in the area monitoring a possible drug buy.
"When all of that started happening last night, (officers) called me an notified me but none of the stuff could be substantiated," Chief Collins said.
