NIT: Northern Kentucky Draws Louisville in Opening Round
Northern Kentucky will appear in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) for the first time in school history and will face the Louisville Cardinals. The Norse's regular season Horizon League championship earned the team the automatic berth.
NKU will travel to Louisville for the game.
Northern Kentucky is 22-9 overall and went 15-3 in the Horizon League. The Norse were upset in the opening round of the conference tournament by Cleveland State. Wright State won the Horizon League's bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The NIT, which has 32 teams, will feature some experimental rules. Instead of two 20-minute halves, there will be four 10-minute quarters. The lane will be widened to 16-feet to match the NBA, and the 3-point line will be extended by 1.8-feet. After an offensive rebound, the shot clock will reset to 20 seconds instead of the usual 30.
Louisville is 20-13 overall.
Last season led to NKU colliding with a blue-blood Bluegradd program, too, when the Norse won the Horizon League tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament, falling in the first round as a 15-seed against 2-seeded Kentucky.
The Norse and Cardinals tip off at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The game will be televised on ESPN.
