Italianfest Returns, Cold Spring Wins Newport's Bocce Ball Crown

Italianfest is back in Newport this weekend, running Thursday through Sunday. As always, the annual event kicked off with a bocce ball tournament at Pompilio's in Newport, pitting local city officials against each other in a tournament.

After winning two years in a row, the host city of Newport - represented by Mayor Jerry Peluso and Commissioner Thomas Guidugli - was blocked from returning to the finals.

Instead, Cold Spring won this year's crown, defeating Dayton in the finals. Other cities in this year's tournament were Bellevue, Covington, Ludlow, and Silver Grove.

Photos from the tournament are in the slideshow below.

Meanwhile, Italianfest begins in earnest on Thursday at 5 p.m. and runs till 11 p.m. with an opening ceremony at 7 p.m.

Find the 27th annual affair along the Newport riverfront between the Purple People and Taylor-Southgate bridges. It features authentic Italian food and live music from entertainers from around the country - and "the old country". There is also a golf outing, a family photo booth to showcase Italian families in the area, a cooking contest, games, and rides.

Participating restaurants include Alfio's, Brio's, Col Pomp, Fred & Nick's Souveniers, La Rosa's, Newport Pizza, Pagano's, Pompilios, Repiccis Italian Ice, Royal Roman Roadhouse, Sons of Italy, Tony's Italian Sausage, and Trotta's.
