LEGO Tournament for Students at NKU This Weekend
More than five hundred students are expected to attend a LEGO robotics tournament and engineering expo at Northern Kentucky University on Saturday, December 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Fidelity Investments is sponsoring the 2013 Northern Kentucky Regional FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament and Junior FIRST LEGO League Engineering Expo for students from the school districts of Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Augusta, Robertson, and Carroll Counties as well as from the Diocese of Covington, the Girl Scouts, local churches, and independent groups.
Robot performance rounds in Regents Hall will begin at 9:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony conducted by US Representative Thomas Massie at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony will conclude the day's event at 4 p.m. in Regents Hall.
Students ages six to fourteen will showcase their constructions and steer their robots through a series of obstacles.
Leading up the event, twelve Fidelity employees have been mentoring five teams at Florence Elementary School made up of second through fifth graders. The purpose is to teach the building of financial literacy.
According to a news release from Fidelity, research shows that young people who experience low quality K-12 education display low levels of financial literacy resulting in households or individuals who are less financially literate and are more likely to take payday loans, pay minimum balances on credit cards, take on high-cost mortgages, have higher debt levels, and be delinquent on debt.
