Fire Claims Duplex's Roof in Independence
A pair of homes in Independence suffered substantial damage during a fire Tuesday afternoon.
Flames were spotted in the rear of 937 Still Meadow Lane at around 4 p.m. and the initial call over the scanner indicated that a deck was on fire. That fire eventually climbed the walls and destroyed the roof over the duplex.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, there were no deliberately placed flammable liquids discovered on the scene, Independence Fire Captain David Murphy told The River City News.
"We suspect it started underneath the deck in the rear of the residence," Murphy said. While the damage was substantial, the homes may not be a total loss. "I've seen them built back worse," Murphy said.
Two families were displaced by the fire.
